WASP (Wide Angle Single Pilot)
360º Projected Display Systems

WASP (Wide Angle Single Pilot) projected display systems are designed to offer technologically enhanced, cost competitive, wide field of view displays for single pilot simulation and training. Covering up to a full 360º, WASP displays offer unsurpassed realism for the most demanding, real world training requirements.

Glass Mountain Optics has adopted the basic elements of the Mobile Modular Display for Advanced Research and Training (M2DART) developed at USAF – Air Force Research Lab, Warfighter Training Research Division in Mesa Arizona. Looking beyond the limitations of the original DART concept, GMO has included design enhancements to make WASP a more versatile display system.

WASP Highlights

  • Multiple configurations offer the best possible performance for both large (Joint Strike Fighter and F-22) and small (F-16) cockpits while allowing adequate room for instructors/observers.
  • Variable field of view options can accommodate low cost applications (single channel) as well as the most demanding requirements (full 360º field of view).
  • System versatility allows for full color, calligraphic target projectors providing near eye limited resolution.
  • Advanced screen coatings achieve higher, more uniform brightness and contrast levels compared to traditional screen technologies.
  • Modular engineering allows for specialized combinations of projectors and lenses to maximize performance for given constraints (budget limitations, facility restrictions, etc.)

Applications to Date

  • F-5
  • F-16
  • F-18
  • F-22
  • F-35/Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)
  • Hawk

Current Configurations

WASP I
Our original configuration, this system was designed to accommodate the larger cockpits of the JSF and F-22, as well as to provide room for instructors. Eight screens offer 360 degrees of display capability.

WASP II
Smaller than our WASP I, the WASP II is the optimal choice for smaller cockpits like the F-16 and F-5. This layout is also ideal for facilities with limited floor space.

WASP III
The WASP III is a custom solution borne out of Glass Mountain Optics’ custom engineering capability. Featuring four rounded rather than flat screens, the WASP III is designed to be compatible with helmet-mounted displays (HMDs). With a 36” eye relief and 222° horizontal field of view, WASP III is a superior alternative to the standard threat station monitor.

WASP IV
Designed as a more cost-effective alternative to the WASP I, the WASP IV consists of four screens instead of eight while still affording a 220 degree horizontal field of view.
